Oblates …

Wherever we may be, we are in the service of the same Lord. RB 61:10

Oblates are lay men and women who affiliate with a monastery without actually living there. The word “oblate” is related to the English word oblation meaning an offering or dedication to God and others as a way of life.

Through their regular work in family and community, the oblates witness to Christ and strive for holiness. The Rule of St. Benedict provides basic values that serve as guides and are easily adaptable to lay life. Through this close association with the monastery, the oblates share in the daily prayer and good works of the community. Their many contacts provide the opportunity to share information about the significance of the
monastic presence for the local Christian community. The oblates support the community and its future through their daily prayer and, when appropriate and as needed, the oblates participate in the on-going activities of the monastery.

Through regular gatherings and/or written communication, the oblates of Mount Benedict Monastery maintain an ongoing relationship with the sisters. The oblates have the opportunity for regular meetings and socials as well as joining
in prayer with the sisters.

A year-long information sharing period is offered before the inquiring man or woman makes a commitment to this way of life.
